Mayflower Outfitters offers guided spring and fall black bear hunting on Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula. With an abundance of food supplies and prey, dense forests, and light hunting pressure, our black bears grow exceptionally large. Our customers have enjoyed a 80% success rate.
Newfoundland is estimated to have up to 10,000 black bears on the island, located in our dense, plentiful forests. Local hunters and wildlife officials have recorded several black bears weighing over 700 pounds, while black bears over 500 pounds are frequently reported. The largest black bear taken at Mayflower Outfitters was 570 pounds. From our perspective, it’s only a matter of time before a Newfoundland black bear shatters the current North American records.
We’ve constructed sturdy tree stands above active baits, which are filled with sweets and tasty foods to attract hungry bears — and keep them coming back for more. Hunters can use either rifle or bow for their black bear hunt. Suggested shots using a rifle usually range from about 40-60 yards, while 15-20 yards is recommended for bow hunting. The bag limit is one black bear per license, and sows with cubs cannot be taken. Hunters can choose to be accompanied by their own personal guide (1:1 hunter to guide ratio) or a guide can be shared amongst two hunters (2:1 hunter to guide ratio).
